A Free Ride (1915) (aka A Grass Sandwich) made in 1915 this is believed to be the oldest surviving pornographic film made in the United States. A mustashioed wealthy man in a big car picks up two girls, one of who wears a Mary Pickford wig, along the side of the road, and drives them out to the desert. Parking the car, he goes behind a bush to relieve himself. The girls follow him and feel compeled to urinate as well. He is arroused by watching them. Upon their return he offers them some booze and then gets one of the girls to go off with him. She submits to his amourous advancements and they are soon joined by the other girl. Its comic titles foretold its plot: Directed by A. Wise Guy, Photographed by Will B. Hard, and Titles by Will She. Because these kinds of films (with increasingly explicit amounts of nudity and sexuality) were completely illegal, they were shown in all-male locations, clubs, etc., not in mainstream theaters.

The production was probably shot in southern California. An example of early American erotica. There is a blooper, at about 9:20 a fourth person accidentally gets into the shot and a few seconds later you can see their hand.

Often dated at 1915, silent film historian Kevin Brownlow, in his book Behind the Mask of Innocence, suggests that it was instead made around 1923, judging by the girl’s fashions. Can anyone ID the car? That would be a big help.

This copy is missing the opening credits but is the highest quality copy of the film I’ve been able to find.
